It Killed my Halloween

It wasn’t until last week that I heard in my LALS class, that stores nationwide were selling a controversial illegal alien costume. For those of you that don’t know how this costume looks like a basic description of it includes an orange jumpsuit, similar to prison garb, with “Illegal Alien” stamped in black across the chest; a space alien mask; and a fake Green Card

After some protest by Immigrant Rights Activist the costume was pulled out of major store companies. It irritates me when a few stores have said that the costume has been a hit http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/10/17/illegal.immigrant.costume/Today in class Angel brought up a very important issue at the end of class today. The controversial  Illegal Alien costume is still being sold, and close to campus. This really upsets me; in fact it upset everyone in the room. I was already bummed out that I had to work on Halloween, but this just topped it off. A lot of the students stayed after class to have a more detailed discussion about it. I expressed my feelings saying that people are ignorant, and unaware of the consequences it has. They have made a mockery out of this costume, thinking it “funny”, just as the description of the costume in this link. http://www.buycostumes.com/Illegal-Alien-Adult-Costume/60504/ProductDetail.aspx It’s not even the costume that gets me mad, it is what they are trying to imply. It downgrades people and ridicules them. This issue already is too sensitive to be playing with it. People don’t realize that families, friends, and so on get affected by this. This only adds more stereotypes and stigma upon a certain group people. http://dissidentvoice.org/2009/10/illegal-alien-costume-a-teaching-not-a-laughing-matter/Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, but when things like this comes out I get frustrated and angry. Yet people still have the nerve to respond and say that by banning this costume it violates freedom of speech. We are going to try to head over the store tomorrow and try to have a peacefull talk with the manager.

Paranormal Activity

I love watching scary movies, although I sometimes get paranoid after seeing them. Yesterday night I finally watched the so talked about movie, Paranormal Activity. I am believer in these kinds of events, so I was excited to see it. Especially because all of my friends that had seen it, talked about how scary it was, and how even guys were screaming and jumping off their seat. I was tired of reading my friends Facebook status saying “I wanna watch it again”, “good luck sleeping at night” and how it is a “must see” movie. With that in mind and with watching over and over the trailers on TV and how they kept saying “demand it” my suspense kept building up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_UxLEqd074 I was really looking forward in seeing this movie, I really wanted to scare. As funny as that sounds I wanted to get spooked out. Now, I’m not going to go into detail of what the movie was about or what happened in it, but damn was I DISAPPOIINTED!!!!!  Maybe it was the headache I had, because for some reason the heating system in the theater was going crazy. One minute it was hot and the next it was cold, not to mention that we sat right below the ventilation. Ugh! But even with the headache I was really into the movie, I was observing everything that was going on, yet I didn’t get scared, I’ll admit it I did jump out of seat in some scenes. However if you haven’t seen this movie, pay real good attention to minor details. I would rate the movie a B- because, it does play with your mind. I did however sleep like a baby. I do recommend you to see the movie, maybe you might get scared!!

On Monday, my mom took me and my brother to the Camino A Casa: Day of Dead exhibition in the The National Museum of Mexican Art.http://www.nationalmuseumofmexicanart.org/dod09.html She wanted us to learn more about how she celebrated El Dia De Los Muertos in Mexico. This exhibition in my opinion was a great demonstration of Mexican tradition and culture for El Dia De Los Muertos. My family looks forwards for November 2nd, where we put up a small altar in my house. My mom and aunts will cook mole for dinner and bake pan calinete with my grandma’s special receipt for hot chocolate. It is important for our family to keep our Mexican traditions and cultures, so they won’t get lost with new generations. I recommend you to visit this free exhibition in Pilsen, it is a great opportunity to learn about how other cultures celebrate Halloween.
